There seems to be some confusion to what exactly the old workhouse is…and what The King Street Workshops are so I thought I would have a go explaining it here.

The Old Workhouse was originally (not surprisingly) the site of the workhouse for Pateley Bridge – the last inmates leaving in 1925…relativeley recently!

The Old Workhouse is the site encompassing the nidderdale museum & the king street workshops. It is the name used on the brown signs and it gives our site kudos as we are not just a museum, or just some artists, we are a collective working heritage. There is also ‘number 6 studio gallery’- a visual arts studio, workshop and rentable exhibition facility.

That seems simple right!

However the museum is run voluntary whereas the studios are not and neither are we subsidized. Therefore to encourage awaren

ess of us we are starting a marketing campaign to increase our profile. 

It is The King Street Workshops at The Old Workhouse.

     Here is a peak at what is currently up in my studio/shop….It is a very bright exhibition of my favourite subject! At the Spark events we try to show new work so this is my new collection. There is also the opportunity to buy unframed work for you to frame up yourself. This allows a discount on the price as well! Summer Spark set to shine

If you like exciting and original design, don’t miss this event at the King Street Workshops, Pateley Bridge.

Now in it’s 5^th year, the annual “Summer Spark” covers ten days and is an opportunity to view work by North Yorkshire’s finest designer-makers. This year, painter Maureen Little exhibits as part of the North Yorkshire Open Studios and resident designer-makers show sculpture, glass, paintings & prints, textiles, jewellery and millinery, all displayed in the studios where the work is produced.

The Spark goes out with a bang on Sunday 19^th June, with a Weaving Workshop held by acclaimed Japanese Textile Artist, Sieko Kinoshita and toe-tapping Latin American music, provided by the accomplished musicians of “Cuban Lift”, rounding off the event.

£10 including notebook, visit my studio to buy!

I have a confession to make. I covet notebooks, in shops, and I am afraid to say, those belonging to other people.  If I see a pretty notebook I feel I will be able to fill it with lots of important writing—maybe I’ll write that novel, or perhaps some essay on art that will be critically acclaimed. Of course if it is a beautiful notebook these fancies will be easy to write and the words will come flowing. No writers block with these notebooks!

Paperchase opening in Harrogate was a disaster for my bank account. I now have drawers full of notebooks, just waiting to be written in. It is this insatiable desire that led me to creating my own notebooks. 

Felt is naturally a very tactile material so I really like this as a book cover. It is soft to hold, and can be very beautiful to look at as a decorative object on a coffee table or desk.

A few years ago I was donated a fabulous box of  buttons. They belonged to an old lady who died and so  I have a fantastic, unique selection ranging from the 1920’s onwards, if not a few earlier dating ones as well. These buttons were perfect for making a fastening, with some fancy thread wrapped around they add history, interest, and keep the books tightly closed. I personally love the fact that you unwrap the thread to get into the book. It has the feeling of unwrapping a present every time you go to draw or write.

I found this recipe online and adapted the ingredients so it is dairy, gluten and egg free. It tastes delicious and people who can eat normal food couldn’t tell the difference.

Ingredients                                         

Cooking Time & Temperatures:
20/25mins at 180°C/Fan 160°C/350°F/Gas 4

  Method

1. Beat together the butter and sugar.
2. Beat in the eggs, vanilla extract, flour and coffee.
3. Divide the mixture between two oiled & lined 20cm/8”round tins.
4. Bake in a pre-heated oven for 20/25 minutes.
5. Cool the sponge layers on a wire rack.
6. Spread chocolate spread on one sponge layer and place the second sponge layer on top.
7. Whip the cream until thick.
8. Stir in the coffee granules and half of the chocolate flakes.
9. Spread the topping over cake.
10. Scatter the remaining chocolate flakes on top.
